USDA Program Funding Cuts Impacting Greater Prince William

In the midst of this holiday season, the federal funding that was keeping so many food pantries afloat has quickly dried up. As food insecurity in the region continues to rise, local food assistance organizations are left with more questions than answers as to how to keep up with the growing needs. Prince William Food Rescue has been coordinating with the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box program as part of the Community Feeding Taskforce response to COVID since July.   During Round 3 of the program, Prince William Food Rescue (PWFR) redistributed over 10,000 USDA food boxes per week in order to support 78 food distribution sites throughout the Greater Prince William Region. That is the equivalent of 1.3 million pounds of food and nearly 1.1 million meals per month. Additionally, the Community Feeding Taskforce (CFT) was redistributing another 3,000 non-perishable food boxes in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank.  ...
