Non-Profit Makeover: ACTS Edition
We are very happy to announce that Comcast, which sponsors a national day of service each April called “Comcast Cares Day” has chosen ACTS as its recipient! On April 22nd, 300 volunteers will descend upon ACTS for four hours to give us a much-needed makeover. There will be painting, planting, minor construction, a party for our residents, and a children’s book drive, clothing drive, and food drive for our clients. Their efforts will be concentrated on the thrift store, administration building, family shelter, Family Services Center, Hunger Prevention Center, and Women’s Empowerment Center. The theme for the event is “Enhancing Dignity,” and the idea is to create a clean, fresh, warm, and welcoming physical space for our clients and staff.
This was all made possible by a program called Leadership Prince William,(LPW) and one of its goals is to nominate an organization for an opportunity to host a service project. LPW vets potential recipients and makes recommendations to Comcast. The 2017 LPW class has taken the lead in organizing the entire event for ACTS.
Comcast Cares Day began in 2001 with 6,100 volunteers helping to improve about 100 community sites. Last year, a record-breaking 100,000-plus volunteers and their nonprofit partners turned out to beautify neighborhoods, spruce up schools, plant trees, stock food banks, and much more, throughout 39 states and the District of Columbia, and in 21 other countries. Comcast Cares Day, which is the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer event, is one of their proudest company traditions.
The staff here is overwhelmed with thankfulness at this prospect, so much so that they will be lending their time to help beautify their own locations. And so many people deserve recognition for making this possible. You and other donors like you have made it possible for ACTS to continue to grow all of these years. Our services have been so needed by our community that, even though we have a wonderful maintenance crew, we need a whole team of folks to undo years of constant use.
Most important of all are the people that continuously volunteer their time and effort to make ACTS a better place to work, and create a more inviting atmosphere for the clients we serve. We’ll never be able to thank these dedicated people enough, but to honor all of our volunteers, we will be holding our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in May. There are still volunteer opportunities available for Comcast Cares Day as well. Thanks to our community partners, ACTS will continue its mission to make Prince William County a safer, friendlier, and more caring place to live in thanks to your help and the help of so many people like you.
